The head of the World Health Organization said that in the past two months, the number of people infected with the new coronavirus each week has almost doubled worldwide and has reached the highest infection rate in the pandemic so far.
Tedros told Adhan Ghebreyesus in a briefing for Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Western Pacific: “The number of cases (infections) and deaths is increasing at an alarming rate.”
The head of the WHO said he is very worried about PNG, which is essential for the country to receive as many covid-19 vaccines as possible.
Papua New Guinea has confirmed more than 9,300 infections, with 82 deaths. Tedros said: “Although these numbers are still lower than other countries, but the increase is staggering, the World Health Organization is worried that this epidemic may be even greater.”
The country’s Health Minister Jelta Wong said that it is extremely challenging to persuade people to wear masks and dispel suspicion of the disease itself, which may complicate the work of vaccination.
WHO officials said three emergency medical teams arrived in Papua New Guinea from Australia, the United States and Germany this week.
Takeshi Kasai, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, said of Papua New Guinea: “The current situation is very challenging.”
