Following the world’s second tennis player Spaniard Rafael Nadal, this year’s Olympic tennis tournament in Tokyo will miss the world’s fifth-ranked Austrian Dominic Tim.
Tim said he hopes to focus entirely on Wimbledon’s Grand Slam tournament and then defend his title at the US Open.
The 27-year-old Austrian wrote on Twitter: “After talking to my team and analyzing the situation, I made the difficult decision to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics.”
“My goal is to work hard in the next few weeks, do my best at Wimbledon, continue training, and hope to defend my title at the US Open,” he added.
Fearing about contracting the Zika virus, Tim missed the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
“I am very young and I hope to play for Austria at the 2024 Paris Olympics,” he added.
