The match between Iga Świątek and Anett Kontaveit had a terrible start. The nightmare of the past seems likely to come back (Estonians won the first two games), but our players on the French tennis court were unstoppable. On Saturday afternoon, the defender won 7:6 (4), 6:0 and entered the fourth round of the event.
Now the Poles will face the 18-year-old Ukrainian Marta Kostiuk. It occupies 81st place in the WTA rankings and ranks the highest at 77th place. In the first round of this year’s French Open, she made a sensation, beating Spaniard Garbina Muguruza (13th in the WTA). In addition, she only lost five games in this game (6:1, 6:4). Muguruza helped her win a lot because she made as many as 40 unforced mistakes, compared with 24 for Ukrainian women.
Kostiuk won the next two rounds without any problems. First, she defeated China’s Zheng Saisai (57th WTA) 6:3, 6:4, and then defeated Russia’s Varara Gresva 6:1, 6:2. Like Iga Świątek, she has not lost a set in this competition.
Three years ago, Kostik shocked the tennis world. She broke into the Australian Open through three qualifying rounds and then advanced to the third round! Had it not been for the 521st ranked player in the world at the time, he was only fifteen years old, it would not be surprising! This result and the third round of the US Open last year are her best results in a Grand Slam tournament so far.
The biggest success of Kostiuk’s career was winning the Australian Open Junior Championship in 2017. She became the first Ukrainian woman in history to do so. In the same year, she and Olga Danilovic won the U.S. Open youth doubles final.
The Świątek-Kostiuk match will be held on Monday. The winner of this game will face the winner of this game: Sophia Kenen-Maria Sakari/Eliz Mertens.
