STARTUP has cooperated with NASA to introduce tireless tires into the mainstream market.
Oddity Central wrote that SMART Tire recently announced an innovative bicycle pneumatic tire that NASA originally developed and tested for future Mars Rover missions.
The revolutionary rubber, called METL, is made of “smart” memory metal, which rearranges its molecular structure when bent, but immediately restores its original shape. It basically has the flexibility of a tire, but is as strong as titanium, which means you don’t have to change a bicycle tire in your life.
“The wires are intertwined to form a beamless structure, which is different from current rigid tires and has the ability to bend with the terrain. The METL tires manufactured through the process of heating the wheels to temperatures higher than 500 degrees Celsius are designed for extreme temperatures and environments (such as those on Mars).
METL smart tires are the result of a program initiated by NASA, which challenges private-sector start-ups to adapt their innovative technologies to space exploration and actual needs on Earth. One of these startups is SMART Tire, which plans to commercially launch its innovative bicycle tires next year.
