Car market news this week
Ssangyong is still alive!
At the end of last year, South Korean Ssangyong Corporation, owned by Indian company Mahindra, declared bankruptcy. But in February, people from HAAH Automotive, a young California holding company, were discovered to have new investors. He was preparing for the US debut of the Chinese brand Zotye (the project has been closed). Although sales have not yet started, he now uses Chery (T-Go brand) and Exeed (Vantas brand). When we are talking about buying a 24% stake in Ssangyong (ie Mahindra will own a 51% controlling stake).
In order to give itself a positive view, the South Korean company launched an updated 5.1-meter Rexton Sports pickup truck and its longer version of the 5.4-meter Rexton Sports Khan.
The designers tried to visually separate the pickup from the basic Rexton SUV, so they got a huge grille guard and vertical navigation light block. Sports Khan also has a reputation on the grille. The wheel arches and doors are lined with plastic, and the tailgate is decorated with plastic panels, and its name is a modified name. The interior has not changed, but good equipment has been retained. Among the options, there is a multimedia system with a 9.2-inch screen, an all-round camera, artificial leather trim, all heated seats, a front seat ventilation system and an integrated electronic driver assistance system.
The pickup is equipped with the previous 2.2 turbo diesel engine (187 hp), the basic version has a power of 400 Nm, and the Khan has a power of 420 Nm. The choice of gearbox-“mechanical” (only for short version) or 6-speed “automatic”, rear wheels or hard-wired four-wheel drive with reducer and rear differential lock. The chassis has not changed. Rexton Sports has a spring-loaded rear suspension and has a lifting capacity of 400 kg. Rexton Sports Khan can carry 500 kg. If a spring is ordered instead of a spring, the load capacity will increase to 700 kg.
The updated pickup can already be ordered in South Korea. SsangYong Rexton Sports starts at US$22,000, and Rexton Sports Khan- starts at US$25,000.
The British company Caterham Cars, known for its Lotus 7-based retro sports cars, has changed car owners. Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandez, who has owned the company since 2011, sold it to the Japanese company VT Holdings.
The terms of the transaction have not been disclosed, but as we all know, Caterham has been working with VT Holdings for 12 years-its official importer in Japan, which sells more than 120 cars a year through a dealer network of 200 showrooms. Kazuho Takahashi, CEO of VT Holdings, was a racing driver and car enthusiast. He promised to retain the basic Caterham Seven model and continue to carry out further modernization.
Hummer EV: And SUV
The GMC Hummer EV SUV has been added to the previously announced GMC Hummer EV. Its appearance is known, and photos and features have now been published.
In fact, pickup trucks and SUVs are different in the rear of the body. The latter is significantly shorter, with a smaller rear overhang, and a wheelbase of 3218 mm instead of 3445 mm. But the space for the rear door and the second row of cars is the same. The EV SUV does not have a third row, the rear door leads to the trunk, and the quiet nautical chart of the moon is depicted on the floor of the compartment. Like a pickup, the SUV has a movable roof, CrabWalk diagonal mode, air suspension and Super Cruise autopilot.
The top three-engine version of the EV SUV is inferior to similar pickup trucks in terms of battery capacity and power (842 hp instead of 1014 hp), but the wheel torque is the same -15,590 Nm. A large SUV can accelerate to 97 km / h in 3.5 seconds (speed up or even faster-3.0 seconds). The cruising range on a single charge is approximately 480 kilometers (560 kilometers for pickups). The charger supports voltages up to 800 volts and power of 350 kW.
The Hummer EV SUV Edition One priced at US$106,000 will be launched in early 2023. At the same time, an extreme off-road kit will also be provided, which includes off-road tires, enhanced axles and additional underbody protection. With it, the price will rise to $111,000. Order acceptance for electric SUVs has been opened.
Toyota’s serial autopilot
Toyota has already launched a production level 2 autonomous driving system. The Advanced Drive complex made its debut on the most advanced platform platforms-Hydrogen Toyota Mirai and Hybrid Lexus LS 500h.
The advanced driver activated only on the highway can maintain the set speed and distance from the vehicle in front, slow down and accelerate the vehicle to keep it in the lane, change lanes and overtake. Indeed, to perform these operations, the system requires confirmation from the driver: you need to press a button on the steering wheel or turn on the corresponding turn signal light. But there is no need to put your hands on the steering wheel, although the system may require intervention when necessary. But the driver should always keep his sight on the road (monitored by a separate camera). If the driver is distracted, the sound and light alarms and seat belt vibrations will be turned on immediately. If the driver does not respond (for example, he feels bad), the car itself will be rebuilt on the side of the road, stop smoothly, turn on emergency lights, unlock the doors and call rescue services.
The Advanced Drive building uses two cameras under the windshield, radar at the corners of the body, lidar on the front bumper, and high-precision navigation maps to determine the number of lanes on the road, the turning slope, and speed limits. The software will automatically update “over the air” and prepare a change package based on the data collected from the machine itself.
Toyota Mirai and Lexus LS 500h sedans equipped with advanced autonomous driving systems will go on sale in Japan this month at prices of US$77,000 and US$149,000, respectively.
