On Monday, Mikhail Marhel resigned as the federal captain of the Belarusian national football team.
The Belarusian lost 8-0 in the World Cup qualifier against Belgium last Tuesday. The last peak was in the 2003 European Championship qualifiers, when Belarus trailed Austria 5-0.
According to an announcement by the Belarusian Football Association (ABFF) on Monday, the coach’s contract has been terminated by mutual agreement.
“After analyzing the situation after the game against the Belgian, I came to the conclusion that I must leave. I think the national team needs to make changes to further develop,” said Maher, who was appointed in June 2019.
According to the association, a game similar to last Tuesday will have a negative impact on the image of Belarusian football.
ABFF added: “Yes, the Belgian team is stronger than us, but we can’t fail like that.” He also emphasized that the failure of Belgium is not just the coach’s fault: the players must share responsibility with Marhell.
