Due to the hot summer in Tokyo, this year’s Olympic marathon was originally scheduled to be held in Sapporo, the northernmost point of Japan’s three major islands. However, one and a half months before the Olympics, the city was greeted by a new wave of coronavirus infections. Therefore, city officials notified the organizers that Sapporo was not ready to host the Olympics.
“We don’t yet know how many athletes will come, and we don’t have enough time to prepare. Many organizational issues are still under consideration. Without a clear structure, we cannot know that the city’s health system will be able to handle this situation. The Olympic Committee is looking for information and as soon as possible,” said Takashi Omu, a member of the Sapporo City Council in charge of preparing for the Olympics.
It was decided two years ago to move the marathon from Tokyo to Sapporo, which has a much milder summer.
