Although Honda engines and Red Bull have performed well since the winter, the reliability does not seem to be the best. This is because in Imola’s second free practice, Max Verstappen’s car was broken, but AlphaTauri had a new electrical problem.
On Friday, Verstappen saw that most of the free exercises were smoked, and he had to put the car aside ten minutes later. According to the Dutch, the drive shaft was broken.
When entering the straight section, after Vestapen drove over the curbstone, this problem clearly appeared. Team boss Christian Horner said the cause is still under investigation.
The first Grand Prix in Bahrain also did not go well for Verstappen. There he ran into problems in the race with the differential, which allocated the distribution of the drive to the rear wheels. This problem can be solved in the game, but it will take the time needed by Limberg, and it may even have to win the game. In addition, according to Helmut Marko, he had to deal with the overheating of the Honda engine and therefore had to reduce the power.
Honda Honda Toyoharu Tanabe (Toyoharu Tanabe) on Friday Japanese media This is much more complicated than the overheating problem. “But we are worried about reliability, so Max can drive with less power.”
The differential problem also affected Sergio Perez’s car. The Mexican car also replaced the control electronics and energy store of his Honda power unit in Bahrain. Both are part of a hybrid system. Each driver can use two per season without penalty.
Bahrain Perez’s problem didn’t stop there: he came to a halt in the warm-up match due to a malfunction in the electrical system. The failure may be due to moisture in the dry ice used to cool the engine before the warm-up circle.
Verstappen’s teammates miraculously let his car run away again. Pierre Gasly also received new control electronics and an energy storage (battery) for his Honda power plant in Bahrain. The same was true after the first free practice in the car of his Japanese AlphaTauri teammate Yuki Tsunoda.
Tanabe said that Perez’s replacement parts can be used again later this season, but this is still a question mark for Gasley. If the driver needs one-third of these elements, he will face a grid penalty of ten positions.
On the list of parts used by each driver, Verstappen is now the only driver at Honda to use one of all parts. All drivers riding with other engine suppliers have not yet had to replace limited engine parts or gearboxes.
By the way, Red Bull manufactures the gearbox and differential itself, just like the failed drive shaft on Friday.
The problems encountered by Verstappen have no effect on this list, so it may cause mesh loss. The team usually does not use the gearbox used in Friday’s race to drive. The Dutchman said: “Tomorrow we will check all the other parts.”
