Jakub Kręcidło: We agree to talk about the great Super League. But when we started talking, Superliga was already disappointed. The last few days of football are strange.
Marcin Animucki, President of Ekstraklasa SA: It hasn’t been so intense for a long time. The situation does not even change overnight, but changes every hour. After all, on Friday, ECA and Juventus President Andrea Agnelli not only negotiated a new format for the UEFA Champions League, but they also joined hands with UEFA and announced that everything is suitable for him… this What means? If they announced on Friday: “Listen, we don’t like the format of the Champions League, we want a revolution”, then their behavior is understandable. The football world experienced a strong earthquake, after which many people were injured and betrayed. The owners of the twelve clubs hope to build the Super League with strict means-a more exclusive game than the current Champions League, and most of the league representatives do not have the opportunity to participate in this Super League. Superliga was created and collapsed within 72 hours, but that does not mean it is over, because there are too many funds involved and it is also outside of Europe. More tense weeks are coming.
Are you surprised by the desire to create a Super League?
Do not. Just a month ago at the European Union meeting (an organization made up of 37 European Unions, including all leading leagues; Animucki is a member of its board of directors-editor’s note), Lariga’s Captain Javier Tebas stated that there are 15 A club is preparing to establish a Super League. This signal has been sent to us for many years, and we know that this concept is being put into practice. The key is that the heads of the three leagues and federations and UEFA jointly make a quick and concrete response. If a breach occurs, for example, if the Italians think this is a good solution, the situation may be different. But this never happened. In any case, in the Super League, many things seem to be inconsistent from the beginning. Over the weekend, there was news that 12 clubs were planning a coup. 12, instead of the 15 announced by Tebas, because Bayern, Baltic and PSG have withdrawn. The projects of twelve clubs from three leagues do not sound as specific as the projects of fifteen clubs in five leagues. Then came the tug of war and the “check” moment. Cards on the table. Not twos and threes, but very serious cards. However, its representatives also participated in the most important clubs of UEFA or the Commission of the European Economic Commission to compete in this way, making it difficult to resume normal talks. The relationship established over the years has been completely destroyed. The top of club football has changed and new numbers appear in ECA or UEFA. Serious figures in politics are also involved, including Emmanuel Macron and Boris Johnson. It is currently difficult to predict anything.
As a former basketball referee, what do you think of the comparison between the Super League and the European Basketball League?
On the surface, the situation is similar. There is a group of people thinking that runs counter to traditional ideas. No matter what Americans or Asians think, we Europeans used to think this was the only right way. At that time and now, the topic of disconnection caused much controversy. The Europa League created and designed games for itself, but it did so under different circumstances. Both the European Union and the Super League were created without the participation of the league, but the European Union was created with the cooperation of the league and the club. Now there is the club itself, without any institutional support. If ECA or the five major coalitions support the Superliga project, the situation may be different.
There are many voices that UEFA has dropped Superliga from the sky. The federation has not only demonstrated its strength, but also won the trust to do what it wants to do. The new format of the Champions League has also caused much controversy, but it has hardly attracted attention. And there have been speculations that UEFA and the Economic Commission for Europe are planning to create a company to manage the European Cup, and one of the investment funds will provide the company with billions of euros in subsidies.
I have been asking for years whether it is possible to make more money. The big shots say yes, it is enough to join one or more exclusive groups. They believe that if there is more money for fewer clubs, then their strength will become easier. Of course it is. However, the Chinese Super League will only exacerbate the imbalance, which is also true. This runs counter to the wishes of the leaders of the largest alliances who want to improve their competitiveness. Generally speaking, stratification does not benefit anyone, and the champion is not known before the tournament begins. The prestige of the club and the game stems from the success of the league. The basis of football is competition on the pitch. In this case, the one you love may also lose the game. Today, analysts hired by clubs look at these tables and find that the estimated revenue is not enough to cover the expenses, but the road to this situation in particular has led to the following problems: Excessive debauchery and staggering amounts of money spent on transfers. The European market has cooled significantly, but the number is still large.
The new format of the UEFA Champions League will start accepting matches on four other days of the week, remember that the calendar is not made of rubber. An Englishman or a Spaniard would say: “Hello, when should I make a cup and another cup…”. It must not be forgotten that in their case, every Wednesday is a huge sum of money for the league or the league. Major leagues such as the Premier League and La Riga League usually earn more from selling rights than from UEFA. Smaller leagues (such as the Czechs and Croats) have different structures. Each promotion to the group stage has a great influence on the club and the entire tournament, and the rights themselves are absolutely cheap. Back to the Super League, its creators announced that they would like to compete on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, if there is a slogan to move the game to the weekend, I will not be surprised. Or go to other markets. The question is, where are the supporters of all this? If anyone wants to know whether fans are willing, the answer given in the last few days is definitely not.
Big football has always been a sport of different speeds.
UEFA’s revenue in three World Cup matches amounted to 4 billion euros. The vast majority of this money will be used for clubs participating in the Champions League, as well as about 700 million euros from the Europa League and Conference League teams. We spent a lot of time on this topic, emphasizing that for us Ekstraklasa, the new cup system is an opportunity. Thanks to the establishment of the conference league, UEFA has become more inclusive and once again provides space for teams from the European continent. This is our opportunity to build some capital and increase our potential. You should also know that in recent years, revenue from European Games has been growing very dynamically. About twelve years ago, the revenue of the UEFA Champions League reached what it is today, even in the Europa League.
