On the second day of England’s 1-0 victory over Croatia in the English Football Association podcast, one of the best players in the game at Wembley yesterday, Kalvin Phillips, was a guest.
Phillips played a wonderful game, interrupted the Croatian midfielder, and assisted Sterling to score the only goal. Today, he especially praised Luka Modric and Matt Kovacic.
“We didn’t know who was in the top 11 until the day before the game. My heart jumped when I heard my name, and then I was scared all day that I would blow everything up. When you see you have to face Modric and Kovacic, you know nothing is harder than that,” he said.
He also enthusiastically described the process of celebrating the goal.
“I don’t remember his assist at all. I remember Walker passing the ball to me, and everything blurred my memory afterwards. When the ball went into the net, the crowd went crazy. That day was my mother’s birthday and celebrated with us before the game. When hitting the ball, she was right in front of us in the stands, so I think we were celebrating with her.”
