Cocaine worth 100 million euros was found in Malta, packed in a container containing bananas, which will be unloaded in Slovenia.
Slovenian media reported on Wednesday that a record amount of 740 kilograms of cocaine was seized. It is estimated that this will bring in 100 million euros in revenue through street sales. The container where the drug was found is on the way from Ecuador to Slovenia.
This is a record amount of cocaine seized in a Mediterranean island country, more than the 612 kg of drugs seized on a ship on the Ecuador-Colombia-Libya route last year.
Malta Customs stated that the discovery of the drug was the result of a long-lasting operation. Along with other cargo, 1,080 boxes of bananas were inspected, 37 boxes of which contained a total of 740 packets of white substance. The laboratory determined that it was cocaine of very high purity.
A special team of the Maltese anti-narcotics police and the investigating judge Caroline Faruja Frendo were informed that the drug had been found.
