NIKOLA JOKIĆ was named the most useful player in the basic part of the NBA in the 2020/21 season. The Serbian center of the Denver Nuggets led the team to 47 victories in 72 games, ranking third among Western clubs, averaging 26.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game.
He became the first center to win the award since Shaquille O’Neal in the 1999/2000 season, replacing MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, who won the MVP title two years ago.
The Denver Nuggets recorded the moment Jokic was informed of his successor ascending the throne. After the league committee member Adam Silver finished speaking, applause broke out in the hall, and then congratulations began. Team coach Michael Malone pointed out that Jokic became the first member of the Nuggets to win the title and the first player to be selected in the second round of the draft.
Jokic thanked all his teammates for this and emphasized that the award is a personal recognition, but without the help of the entire team, he would not be able to win the award.
