Center Denver Nuggets Nikola Jokic was named the most useful player in the basics of the NBA this season. This is the first such award for the Serbian basketball player who was selected by the Nuggets with the 41st overall pick in the 2014 draft.
Jokic learned of the award at a team meeting. He pointed out at the meeting that he would not be able to win the award without his teammates, so he thanked everyone. He later answered the questions he pointed out on the TNT show:
“People believe in me and work hard to come here with me. I thank them for that. I have worked and had luck, and this award is the result of all this.”
The 26-year-old Jokic from Sombor is the first center after Shaquille O’Neal to receive the award, who was named the most useful player of the 1999/2000 season. It was O’Neal who asked him if he had fantasized that one day he would become the MVP of the NBA.
”No. To be honest, I don’t even think I will play in the NBA, let alone become an MVP. My goal is to participate in the European League and a strong Serbian club. When the Denver Nuggets drafted me, it was an opportunity to become an NBA player. I think I use it very well. “
Jokic also emphasized that the best season in the NBA has passed, adding that this award is proof. The Nuggets center averaged 26.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 8.3 assists for the main part of the season. In an average of 34.6 minutes per game, he added 1.3 goals and 0.7 blocks per rehearsal, leading his team to rank third in the West with a score of 47 wins and 25 losses.
