Until the age of 25, almost 60,000 jobs were lost. In contrast, older workers have recovered and are at the highest level in history.
Compared with the pre-pandemic period, the Portuguese labor market in March reduced the number of net unemployed to slightly more than 55,000 jobs, which fully explained the reason for the decline in the youth employment rate. At that time, the employment level of workers and the elderly had exceeded the level of February. Level. In 2020, it will reach a record high.
The provisional estimate of employment levels registered in March released by the National Bureau of Statistics yesterday once again brought the employed population to over 4.7 million. This is the highest number since November last year, when the job market experienced a brief recovery but was interrupted by the new limitations of the third wave of Covid-19.
Compared with February last year, in the month before the Portuguese pandemic where the pandemic was effectively restricted by activities, the National Bureau of Statistics recorded 55,300 jobs in March, a decrease of 1.2%.
Analyzing employment estimates by age group, it seems that the number of net unemployed mainly falls on workers between the ages of 16 and 24, with 59,800 fewer jobs in March than in the month before the pandemic.
Since then, the employment rate for youth jobs has fallen by 20%. In March, the number of jobs occupied by children under the age of 25 fell by 239,200, and has since declined month by month: in the past month, there were more than 1,300. Young people have no jobs. In February last year, 299,000 young people joined the job market.
However, in the age group over 25, the job market is not the same. Employment levels are rising, even surpassing the pre-pandemic period. In fact, this is the highest record in the history of INE’s monthly employment data, with 4461 000 older workers integrated into the market.
Compared with February 2020, 4,500 jobs have now been added, an increase of 0.1%.
The data on the adjustment of the employment age structure is consistent with those who have left the employment center in the past month: they are the youngest workers and employed workers, and the number of unemployed has increased the most.
