The President of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, announced on Monday that Guatemala will purchase 16 million doses of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine. About half of the population will be vaccinated against covid-19.
In a speech to the public, Giammattei said that the government carried out a fund transfer on Monday to pay for the vaccine, which should be paid within the next two weeks.
Considering that the Sputnik V vaccine is administered in two doses, this Central American country with approximately 16.5 million inhabitants can use the vaccine ordered to vaccinate approximately half of the population.
According to Reuters, since the start of the pandemic, Guatemala has had 195,471 cases of coronavirus infection and 6,891 deaths.
