The government intends to mobilize community funds and/or proceeds from 5G auctions to “promote the implementation of new CAM ring networks and digital intercontinental connections”, as detailed in the big selection 2021-2025 approved on Thursday.
The document said: “The digital connection between the African continent and the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira must be maintained, modernized and strengthened,” adding that “the new submarine cable system should be put into use before the end of 2024.”
“To this end, community funds and/or the proceeds from the 5G auction process will also be mobilized to promote the implementation and operation of new CAM ring networks and digital intercontinental connections to replace the current submarine cable communication system.” A major government choice.
The goal is to “provide high-speed infrastructure capacity for digital communications and provide availability to keep up with the ever-increasing demand in the coming decades.”
According to an order issued in September last year, the investment in the replacement of submarine electronic communication cables between the African continent, the Azores and Madeira is 118.9 million euros. This work is expected to be completed in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
According to the order published in the “Republic Daily” on September 30, the order determined the beginning of the process of replacing the current electronic communication system between the mainland and the islands. “The construction of the CAM ring should be regarded as a priority project in order to obtain The effect of obtaining financing from the European Union”, with an estimated investment value of 118.9 million euros.
A new set of CAM submarine cable infrastructure will use six pairs of optical fibers in all network segments, supplemented by a pair of optical fibers from Madeira, and should be equipped with seismic detection equipment for alarms, environmental measurements, detection of underwater navigation activities and Data transfer for scientific projects.
Currently, the electronic communication between the Portuguese submarine territories and the Azores and Madeira Islands is provided through a submarine cable system: two from Carcavelos, one to São Miguel and the other to Madeira Larvae, the third one is between Makadira Island. São Miguel and Madeira (called the “CAM Ring”), with a total length of 3,700 kilometers.
