The French city of Draveil is very happy with the mayor’s resignation. The man has been in jail for several months, but continues to escape from his cell in his city. Today, he decided to resign.
“Salute to everyone who worked hard to fire!” Opposition member François Damerval wrote on Twitter. Congressman Marie Guévemoux said: “After 10 years of shady business, this page can finally be opened.”
The protagonist is Georges Tron, 63, the former secretary of state and to this day, the mayor of approximately 30,000 residents south of Paris.
He was convicted of rape and sexual assault on appeal in February. The victim is a subordinate of the mayor. The judge believes that sexual violence occurs during working hours and workplaces. “The mayor has abused power and power.”
Tron was sentenced to three years and two years in prison for probation. He was also banned from running for six years. But he just kept running the city in his cell. This is legally possible because he insisted on maintaining his innocence and appealed the sentence.
His photos are still displayed on the city’s website, he read his letters at city council meetings, and wrote in a newsletter to residents that he is busy managing the city “every day”.
A protester told the National Bureau of Statistics earlier this month: “We ask the man to resign.” He participated in demonstrations by left-wing opposition and feminist organizations. “The government needs to take action. Why did they just let the convicted mayor continue to run for it?”
It was only after that demonstration that President Macron’s government began to act. Government spokesman Gabriel Attal said: “We are studying the possibility of removing the mayor.” “Legally speaking, there are a lot of hooks and eyes.”
Georges Tron did not want to wait for this decision and has now resigned. He said: “This is a painful decision.” “The vast majority of residents support me.”
