France’s youngest president wins in trouble

Emmanuel Macron, the French president, has grown from a young political rookie into a key EU policymaker and a major player in just five years.

In a two-person field, Macron defeated conservative candidate Marine Le Pen 59-41. This is only the second time they have met in a presidential election. Five years ago, Macron defeated Le Pen 2-1.

He has been actively involved in efforts to end Russia’s war on Ukraine. According to poll predictions, he is now the first French president to win a second term.

This is despite the difficulties like the yellow vest protests, the pandemic and what voters consider him to be arrogant and “the rich men’s president”. His unusual marriage with a woman aged 24 years later caught the attention of many.

At his biggest rally, he paid a touching tribute to his wife Brigitte Macron. He called her “the person that I care about the least.”
