Mamadou Dia worked as a reporter for ten years, and his first feature film was inspired by African scenes.
A small town in Senegal, between the river and the desert, appears in a bird’s-eye view. Passed high and almost blurred under the white light that crushed it, it was still just an indeterminate setting. Then, in the dust of the streets and the darkness of the houses, the silhouettes of men and women gave this painting its life and uniqueness. Each one was shot very closely, bringing clues and details to outline the first outline of the story. Tierno (Alassane Sy) First of all, this imam has a gentle face, and his lungs have been to the doctor countless times. His daughter Nafi (Aicha Talla) falls in love with her cousin Tokala (Arasane Ndoye), and both of them are eager to get married and then go to Dakar to study. Ousmane (Saikou Lô), Tokara’s father and Tierno’s brother, returned to his hometown after spending many years in Europe.
This small family world captured in the repetitive scenes of daily life has exposed the tension of director Mamadou Dia in constructing his first feature film with infinite patience. Nafi’s father evolved like the edge of a bow before shooting an arrow. More and more tense, until vibrating and relaxing. At the same time, this story full of tension and problem-solving will acquire a tragic dimension. This corresponds to the director’s imagination of what might happen to his native Senegal if Islamists are in power.
Nearly ten years before the reporter chose the film path, Mamadou Dia witnessed similar situations, especially in Nigeria and Mali. He was inspired by this to write a script based on the relationship between the two brothers, revealing certain realities in sub-Saharan Africa. The state’s dysfunction—even its absence—and the humiliation it suffered among the people, the suffering weakened the family nucleus, and the power of social networks throughout the history of the country. Nafi’s fatherThe director never makes judgments carefully, he still focuses on the privacy of his character. Views followed in slow days and rituals reveal the complexity of journey, past or future choices.
Osman can make a decision. When he was very young, he left his family and went to Europe to explore the world. He came back with a radical attitude, hoping to develop his city and enrich himself. On the contrary, after the death of his father, Tierno had little other possibility, and could only take over and become an imam. By convention, he must have married a woman older than him. From this union, a daughter was born, Nafi, and he maintained a beautiful relationship with her. Moreover, when the latter announced to him that she wanted to marry her cousin Tokala, Tierno did not object. He was just content to introduce her to other boys in an attempt to change her mind. But the time has come for everyone to stick to their positions and decide the rules of marriage. This moment established the first base of the conflict between the first two brothers, and then the two clans in the town.
