Data released on Thursday by two systems that monitor the safety of vaccines showed that after Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna received the second dose of the mRNA vaccine against covid-19, more young men suffered from myocardial inflammation than expected.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), after the Israeli Ministry of Health announced a possible link between the health of young men and Pfizer, the agency and other health regulators are investigating myocardial inflammation. Vaccination against covid -19.
The agency said that it is still investigating possible risks and has not yet reached a final conclusion on the causal relationship between the vaccine and myocarditis and pericarditis.
The CDC stated that although some patients require hospitalization, most patients have fully recovered.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that after the patient received a second dose of Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna, more than half of myocarditis and pericarditis cases in the US vaccine side effect monitoring system occurred between 12 and 24 years of age.
The vaccination rate for this age group is less than 9%.
“There is indeed an imbalance here,” said Dr. Tom Shimabukuro, deputy director of the CDC Center for Immunization Safety, in a report to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Advisory Committee at a meeting on Thursday.
Shimabukuro added that most cases occurred within a week after vaccination.
The CDC said 283 cases of myocarditis have been reported after people between the ages of 16 and 24 received the second dose of the vaccine, and 10 to 102 cases are expected to occur in this age group.
Shimabukuro noted that another VSD system that monitors vaccine safety found that the incidence of myocarditis in this group increased during the 16 to 39 years after the second dose of vaccine compared to the percentage recorded after the first dose of vaccine.
The Israeli Ministry of Health said earlier that it has found a possible link between the vaccine and a small number of cases of myocarditis in young men who received Pfizer vaccine.
The CDC stated that it will hold an immunization advisory committee meeting next week to further analyze the evidence and assess the risk of myocarditis after vaccination with the mRNA vaccine against covid-19.
Pfizer stated that he supports the CDC’s analysis, but also emphasized that this number is very small given how many doses of vaccine have been used.
Approximately 130 million people in the United States have been vaccinated with one of two mRNA vaccines.
Moderna announced that it has not established a link between heart disease and vaccines, but it is actively working with public health representatives and regulatory agencies to further analyze this issue.
