Serbian radio and television on Wednesday quoted Sofia’s official sources to announce that Bulgaria’s MiG-29 crashed into the Black Sea during the 2021 Sabre exercise, which also involved fighters from the Serbian Air Force.
The Bulgarian Ministry of Defense stated that all three Serbian MiG-29 aircraft that took off during the exercise have safely returned to the Ignatijevo Graf base.
The Bulgarian Defense Minister Georgy Panayotov confirmed that the 2021 Shabla exercise was suspended after the accident.
The Bulgarian fighter, which disappeared from the radar screen 45 minutes after midnight, has not been found, and searches involving the navy, special forces and border police are ongoing.
According to a report by Bulgarian Radio Free Europe, Bulgarian Prime Minister Stefan Yanev told bTV that the pilot did not report any problems before disappearing from the radar.
The cause of the accident is currently unknown.
