In an international debate on tax increases for multinational corporations, an investigation by the independent organization ProPublica confirmed on Tuesday that several American billionaires have managed to avoid paying income taxes for years.
The New York-based organization expressed on its website that it wanted to “condemn abuse of power and betrayal of public confidence,” saying that Amazon owner Jeff Bezos did not pay any federal taxes in 2007 and 2011, and Tesla’s leadership Elon Musk, who did not pay in 2018.
Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are among the three richest people in the world.
The report added that entrepreneur and politician Michael Bloomberg, businessman Karl Icahn and philanthropist George Soros also avoided paying all federal taxes.
The organization came to these conclusions after reviewing the tax returns of thousands of wealthy Americans over 15 years.
“In general, they destroy the foundation of the American tax myth: everyone pays the taxes they are due, and the richest people pay the most,” the author wrote.
At the request of Agence France-Presse, the teams of Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Michael Bloomberg, Carl Icahn and George Soros did not comment.
