Bill Gates and his company TerraPower will build a next-generation nuclear power plant in Wyoming. It is still a demonstration project, but the power station will indeed provide power.
Gates helped launch TerraPower in 2006. It works with energy company PacificCorp, which is owned by Warren Buffett Berkshire Hathaway. Gates and Buffett have been friends for a long time, and Buffett donated billions of dollars to the couple’s charity organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
This is about a Uranium fuel and sodium-cooled 345 MW fast reactor. Including a molten salt energy storage system that can be used as a battery and boost the energy to 500 MW in more than five hours. With this maximum output, the factory will generate enough energy to power 400,000 homes.
Digital tools are used to simulate any problem and optimize components.
The exact location of the nuclear power plant will be determined before the end of the year, and construction is expected to take about seven years.
The construction cost of the pilot plant is unclear. Reuters quoted an earlier figure of US$1 billion, while Gates cited a figure of US$4 billion.
A group of concerned scientists issued a report in March questioning the so-called benefits of the TerraPower method for nuclear power.
