The forward Karim Benzema of the French national team and Real Madrid was injured in a friendly match between France and Bulgaria a week before the first European match against Germany. The Netherlands does not have midfielder Donny van der Beck.
Benzema retired last week after being suspended for five years and left the field with a right knee injury in the 39th minute of the game. Olivier Giroud replaced him. The Euro will start on Friday, June 11, with France and Germany, Portugal and Hungary in Group F.
The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) announced on Tuesday that midfielder Donny van de Beek also withdrew from the Dutch national team due to injury before the start of the European Championship.
Van der Beck was injured in the groin. KNVB said that after the search, it concluded that he was not ready to participate in the European Cup that started on Friday.
The Netherlands will play the first European Cup Group C match against Ukraine in Amsterdam on Sunday.
Van der Beck, 24, said in a short video posted on Instagram: “This disappoints me, especially because it will be my first European Championship. I regret that I cannot participate now.”
So far, he has played 19 games for Oranje.
KNVB also announced that head coach Frank De Boer will not call anyone to replace the bench, even if he is allowed to replace Van der Beck before the first game.
