“The terrorist incident on the Italian highway A1” and “Modena, the A1 highway from hell” are just some of the morning headlines after the Italian media was robbed of an armored vehicle not far from Modena.
It is Italy’s main highway A1, connecting Milan and Naples. The attack occurred between the Valsamoggia and Modena Sud exits in the direction of Bologna. The highway was blocked from Monday night until this morning. It was closed for about seven hours in both directions.
The Italian media wrote that the robbers belonged to the Mafia, who sprinkled spikes on the road, punctured tires and prevented vehicles from moving further. They got out of the car with Kalashnikov rifles in their hands, forcing some drivers to get out of the car.
Witnesses said that three explosions were heard soon. The robbers blew up the vehicle, which was later proved to be stolen, and they used it to reach the highway to cover up all traces. They also shot into the air to intimidate those around them.
They also detonated smoke bombs, set up a barrier between themselves and possible police pursuits, and then forced two truck drivers to block their vehicles across the road, thereby further closing the access to the robbery scene.
“I was afraid that I would die, and I saw someone attacking people with a machine gun,” said a person who testified for the Republic. Other witnesses to Il Quotidiano Nazionale described the situation as the “Wild West” and the “End of the World”. “It’s too much like a movie, and we are scared,” one-third of the people said when talking about Corriere di Bologna. On the other hand, the fourth describes how he “shocked and how everything is filmed”.
In the end, no civilians were injured, and the security guard driving the armored car was slightly injured and discharged. Italian media speculated that there were about 2 million euros in the safe of the armored car, but the robbers did not open it.
They are now at large and the Italian police claimed that they did not take the spoils but managed to break the door of the armored vehicle. Their robbery will end here. Soon after, they ran away, and the police suspected that they were on their way to Bologna.
