Due to the sharp increase in the number of new infections, most areas of Austria have re-applied strict closure measures starting today.
In Vienna, Burgenland and the federal states of Lower Austria, the measures to close most retail stores were once again implemented. Cultural institutions such as museums and art galleries are also closing. During Easter, the masses should observe strict hygiene regulations.
You are only allowed to leave your apartment if you have a valid reason. The meeting is limited to one person from another family. In these four federal states with a population of 9 million Austrians, these measures will take effect before April 10.
According to the latest data, the seven-day incidence rate in these three eastern provinces is 340, while in the rest of Austria, this figure is slightly lower, at 260 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Experts have repeatedly called for strict closure measures to reduce the sharp rise and end the third pandemic. At the same time, they warned that the intensive care unit was overcrowded.
In order to speed up the vaccination process, the government yesterday announced the purchase of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, although the vaccine has not yet been approved in the European Union. Austria is at the forefront of countries that are not satisfied with the practice of distributing vaccines within the EU, including Croatia. So far, 1.5 million people in Austria have been vaccinated.
