According to the predictions of the TV channels ARD and ZDF, the CDU won the most votes so far in the elections in Saxony-Anhalt. When the polling station closed at 6 pm, the Christian Democrats’ approval rate was 35%.
Right-wing populist AfD followed closely with 23.5% of the vote. Then there are the Left Left Party (11%), the Social Democratic Party (8%), the Liberal FDP (7%) and the Green Party (6%).
“I’m very happy,” the CDU list leader and state prime minister Reina Kasselov said after the forecast was announced. He said voters voted against AfD.
This prediction gave a boost to Armen Laschet, the successor to the CDU of party leader Angela Merkel. Raschelt topped the list in the German parliamentary elections in September.
The CDU has performed poorly in opinion polls. The elections in Saxony-Anhalt are the last elections in Germany before the September elections and are therefore regarded as Touchstone.
Five years ago, AfD had already achieved good results in Saxony-Anhalt, and right-wing populists once again led the polls. They can even be the biggest, some people think.
